Cusps in CDM halos: The density profile of a billion particle halo
نویسندگان
چکیده
We resolve the inner region of a massive cluster forming in a cosmological ΛCDM simulation with a mass resolution of up to 3 × 105M⊙. This is a billion times less than the clusters virial mass and is about two orders of magnitude better than the current highest resolution ΛCDM simulations. We achieve this resolution using a new multi-mass refinement procedure and are now able to probe a dark matter halo density profile down to 0.1 percent of the virial radius. The inner density profile of this cluster halo is well fitted by a power-law ρ ∝ r down to the smallest resolved scale. An inner region with constant logarithmic slope is now resolved, which indicates that cuspy profiles describe the inner profile better than recently proposed profiles with a core. For this cluster the inner slope is about γ = 1.2, close to the medium value in a sample of six high resolution cluster simulations of Diemand et al. (2004b).

Cusps in CDM halos
We resolve the inner region of a massive cluster forming in a cosmological ΛCDM simulation with a mass resolution of 2 × 106M⊙ and before z=4.4 even 3 × 10 5M⊙. This is a billion times less than the clusters final virial mass and a substantial increase over current ΛCDM simulations. We achieve this resolution using a new multi-mass refinement procedure and are now able to probe a dark matter ha...
متن کاملThe Effect of Gasdynamics on the Structure of Dark Matter Halos
Adaptive SPH and N-body simulations were carried out to study the effect of gasdynamics on the structure of dark matter halos that result from the gravitational instability and fragmentation of cosmological pancakes. Such halos resemble those formed in a hierarchically clustering CDM universe and serve as a test-bed model for studying halo dynamics. With no gas, the density profile is close to ...
متن کاملThe Inner Density Cusp of Cold Dark Matter Halos
I report recent results of numerical simulations designed to study the inner structure of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos. This work confirms the proposal of Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) that the shape of ΛCDM halo mass profiles differs strongly from a power law and is approximately independent of mass. The logarithmic slope of the spherically-averaged density profile, as measured by β = −d ln ρ/d...
متن کاملDark Halos around Spirals; no role for collisionless Cold Dark Matter particles
From the analysis of high–quality optical rotation curves of 9 low–luminosity disk galaxies, we find that the properties of the dark halos around these objects are inconsistent with the halo density profile of the halos emerging in high resolution Cold Dark Matter N-body simulations. Dark halos around galaxies are almost constant density spheres, very different from the characteristic CDM ρ(r) ...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Dark-Matter Dominated Cosmological Halos
Adaptive SPH and N-body simulations were carried out to study the evolution of the equilibrium structure of dark matter halos that result from the gravitational instability and fragmentation of cosmological pancakes. Such halos resemble those formed by hierarchical clustering from realistic initial conditions in a CDM universe and, therefore, serve as a test-bed model for studying halo dynamics...
